The Penn State Nittany Lions lost both of their matches to the Ohio State Buckeyes last season on scores of 79-83 and 82-92, so they’re hoping to turn the tables this season. The Nittany Lions and OSU will face off in a Big Ten battle at 7:30 p.m. ET on Sunday at Bryce Jordan Center. OSU will be strutting in after a win while Penn State will be stumbling in from a defeat.
Penn State entered their contest against the Miami (Fla.) Hurricanes on Wednesday without any home losses — but there’s a first time for everything. Penn State was within striking distance but couldn’t close the gap as they fell 63-58 to Miami (Fla.). One thing holding Penn State back was the mediocre play of guard Sam Sessoms, who did not have his best game: he finished with only eight points on 4-for-12 shooting in his 33 minutes on the court.
Meanwhile, OSU didn’t have too much breathing room in their matchup with the Duke Blue Devils on Tuesday, but they still walked away with a 71-66 victory. OSU can attribute much of their success to forward E.J. Liddell, who posted a double-double on 14 points and 14 boards in addition to six dimes, and forward Zed Key, who had 20 points. Liddell has also now had at least three blocks in his past four games.
Penn State is now 4-3 while the Buckeyes sit at 5-2. Two stats to keep an eye on: The Nittany Lions are stumbling into the game with the 358th fewest takeaways in college basketball, having accrued only 7.9 on average. OSUs have had an even harder time: they are 39th worst in college basketball in takeaways, with only 11.3 on average. It’s possible one of these Achilles’ heels will wind up tripping the losing team up.
